The common StarChestnut is an unusual looking tree; making it hard to miss with its huge trunk and in its grey-pink colour. It can be found growing naturally in the lowveld of KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo Province, as well as Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The star-shaped velvety fruit capsules start appearing from September and ripen towards March. Birds, game and stock eat the seeds of this tree. The leaves and young stems are eaten by browsers.

From the dry to the rainy season, spectacular shows take place under the StarChestnut trees in which the multitudes of species that inhabit the southern African territories participate.
