New Genoa Breakwater – Immersed in the Future

The first stone has been laid for the New Breakwater in Genoa, an unprecedented engineering project in terms of complexity, scale, and strategic impact on both the city and the entire Italian port system. This revolutionary development marks a pivotal moment in Genoa’s infrastructure expansion and competitiveness.

The official ceremony began with an institutional gathering at the historic Sala delle Compere in Palazzo San Giorgio. Through a live broadcast, attendees witnessed the first underwater gravel deposit, the foundational step for the construction of the breakwater. This symbolic yet crucial milestone signified the official start of the project.

Celebrations continued at the Porto Antico, which was transformed into a visionary stage featuring three large-scale installations that brought the breakwater’s concept to life. In Piazzale Mandraccio and Piazza De Ferrari, massive hot air balloons supported scale models of the breakwater’s caissons, creating an immersive visual experience. The event also engaged the public with culinary experiences and live musical performances, making the day even more memorable.

At 5:30 PM, one of the installations embarked on a symbolic journey towards the existing breakwater, serving as a spectacular preview of the transformation underway. The celebration reached its climax at 8:30 PM, when Genoa’s sea lit up with a breathtaking show of lights, music, and fireworks, closing the day with a powerful message of innovation and progress.
